The situation in Burkina Faso remains calm as of today, the Russian embassy in the Republic of Cote d'Ivoire and concurrently in Burkina Faso told TASS on Tuesday.
"According to information available to the embassy, the situation in Burkina Faso remains calm. The new authorities are working on the formation of a government structure. The so-called Founding Act has been adopted and the constitution has been restored in the part that does not contradict the mentioned act," the Russian diplomatic mission informed.
The embassy added that a summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is scheduled for February 3 to discuss the situation in Burkina Faso.
The military rebelled in Burkina Faso on January 23 and seized power a day later. They announced the ouster of President Roch Marc Christian Kabore, the suspension of the constitution and the dissolution of the government and parliament. At the same time, they said they would soon present a timetable for Burkina Faso's return to constitutional order.
On Monday, the Burkina 24 news portal reported that the leader of the military that seized power in Burkina Faso, Lt. Col. Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, has been declared president of the country.
