Russian Embassy Urges Caution for Citizens in Mali and Niger

25 July

The Russian Embassy in Mali and Niger has issued a strong advisory for Russian nationals, urging them to remain within the capital cities of Bamako and Niamey and to stay indoors after dark due to heightened terrorist threats.

"Given the precarious security situation and the elevated risk of terrorism, we strongly advise against traveling to any part of Mali and Niger," - stated the embassy's message on its Telegram channel. - "Russian citizens residing in or visiting Mali and Niger should avoid venturing outside Bamako and Niamey and should remain indoors at night."

The embassy emphasized the severe danger in border areas between Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, particularly in the regions of Gao and Menaka in Mali, and Tilaberi in Niger, where militant activity is notably high. "Travel to these regions is highly discouraged due to the significant risk of terrorist attacks, robberies, and kidnappings," the message warned.

For years, southwestern Niger, near the borders with Mali and Burkina Faso, has experienced increased extremist and terrorist activities. On July 22, at least 15 Nigerian soldiers were killed in a clash with terrorist groups in the Tilaberi region, on the Bankilare-Tera road near the village of Foneko.
