Russian Embassy Urges Citizens in Bangladesh to Exercise Increased Caution

24 November

The Russian Embassy in Bangladesh has enhanced its security measures and advised Russian citizens in the country to exercise heightened caution due to rising political tensions in the South Asian republic.

The diplomatic mission stated that "political tensions are escalating across Bangladesh, particularly in the capital Dhaka," citing the November 17 death sentence verdict against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and ongoing disputes between major political parties as significant destabilizing factors. Clashes between party activists and law enforcement have resulted in casualties.

"We cannot rule out provocations from any political faction. The embassy has implemented enhanced security protocols," the mission emphasized.

In light of protest and unrest risks, the embassy recommended that Russians in Dhaka:

· Avoid demonstration sites and large gatherings
· Monitor the embassy's official communications
· Check local conditions before traveling within the city
· Consider registering with the consular section when possible

On November 17, the International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death for crimes against humanity and genocide. Hasina, who resigned following anti-government protests in July-August 2024 that left approximately 1,400 dead, currently resides in India. She has consistently denied ordering lethal force against protesters and maintains her complete innocence regarding all charges.
