Russian Foreign Ministry Condemns E3’s Push to Reinstate UN Sanctions on Iran

29 August

Russia has strongly criticized the United Kingdom, France and Germany for seeking to reimpose UN sanctions on Iran. In an official statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry noted that on August 28, the foreign ministers of the UK, France and Germany addressed a letter to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the UN Security Council, alleging that Tehran is significantly failing to uphold its commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

“This letter is being presented as a notification under paragraph 11 of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, supposedly triggering a process to restore long-cancelled UN sanctions on Iran. In reality, such action cannot be recognized for this purpose. We resolutely condemn these moves by European countries and call on the international community to reject them. Such manipulations can create no obligations for other states,” the ministry stated.

Russian diplomats described the E3’s actions as a blatant attempt to manipulate Resolution 2231’s provisions. “Taking advantage of the unique and complex ‘snapback’ mechanism laid out in the resolution, the UK and its partners are trying to interpret the procedures as they see fit. The JCPOA and Resolution 2231 were built on a careful balance of interests—if that’s lost, the agreements break down,” the ministry emphasized.

The statement further warned that these steps are a destabilizing factor, undermining diplomatic efforts to resolve concerns about Iran’s peaceful nuclear program through international law and dialogue. “It’s vital to prevent any new escalation around Iran’s nuclear program, which—as seen following this June’s foreign aggression—could have serious consequences for international peace and security,” the ministry said.

Moscow called on the E3 to reconsider their decisions and return to constructive dialogue before the situation worsens. “By acting outside the legal framework and encouraging other states to do the same, the E3 are only deepening their violations, which is regrettable and unacceptable,” the ministry concluded.
