Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin on Wednesday during a meeting with Moroccan Ambassador to Moscow Lotfi Bouchaara pointed to the importance of the swift appointment of a UN Secretary-General's Envoy for the Western Sahara settlement.

"The importance of the early appointment of the new personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General and the advances in the resumption of negotiations between the parties was noted. There was general appreciation for the stabilizing role of the UN referendum mission in Western Sahara," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Vershinin and Bouchaara exchanged views on issues on the agenda of the UN Security Council, with a focus on the problems of the Western Sahara settlement. The sides stressed that achieving a fair and sustainable settlement is possible only through political means on the basis of the relevant Security Council resolutions.

The meeting was initiated by a Moroccan diplomat.
