Russian foreign ministry: US has not requested transit of military cargo from Afghanistan

26 April 2021

Washington and NATO have not asked Moscow to assist in withdrawal of forces from Afghanistan, including allowing the land and air transit of military cargo through the territory of the Russian Federation. This was told TASS by Russian Special Presidential Representative for Afghanistan and Director of the Foreign Ministry’s Second Asia Department Zamir Kabulov on Monday.

‘No, not yet’, he said in response to a related question.

Russia stopped the transit of NATO armaments and military equipment through its territory to Afghanistan for the International Security Assistance Force in 2015 as the mission’s mandate came to an end.

On 14 April, President of the USA Joe Biden announced that he was planning to begin withdrawing US troops from Afghanistan in May and complete it by 11 September 2021. On Sunday Lieutenant General Scott Miller, commander of US and NATO forces in Afghanistan, announced that preparations had begun to evacuate some US bases in the republic. A few days ago, it was reported that the US military deployed in Afghanistan had begun dismantling and collecting their equipment and had ordered the suspension of contingent maintenance contracts in preparation for the withdrawal of forces from the country.
