Russian MFA: Moscow expects Kabul to rectify situation with education rights

23 December 2022

Russia expects Afghanistan to improve the situation with the rights to education after the Taliban (banned in Russia) imposed a ban on girls' education in universities of the country, the Russian MFA said in a statement on Friday.

"We noted with concern the news of the Taliban government's imposition of a ban on the education of girls in higher education institutions in Afghanistan. The right to education is among the basic human rights and freedoms," they noted.

"We expect that Kabul will soon take necessary measures to rectify this situation," the Russian diplomatic mission stressed.

Moscow has taken note of the Afghan authorities' justifications for linking the ban on higher education for girls allegedly with security problems or economic difficulties, the foreign ministry said. "We believe that education of the population without any discriminatory approaches is the key to favorable social and economic development of the modern society," the Russian diplomatic mission said.
