Russian MFA says Sudan crisis risks to drag on

19 June 2023

The long-drawn crisis in Sudan will lead to unpredictable consequences for the country and the whole region, and the risks of such developments are becoming more and more evident, a source at the Russian foreign ministry told TASS on Monday.

"We observe with concern the bloody armed conflict in friendly Sudan. The metropolitan area has become a battlefield. The population is fleeing Khartoum. The infrastructure is destroyed. Thousands of civilians were killed. Many have lost their homes and property. The risks of the current devastating crisis dragging on, with unpredictable consequences for both the country and the entire region, are becoming increasingly visible," said a source at the agency.

The interlocutor of the agency noted that all this is "a direct result of the four-year-long attempts to forcibly impose artificial Western 'democratization' templates that are profoundly alien to ordinary Sudanese who respect their own identity, their traditional cultural and moral reference points and values." "Moreover, they are extremely 'sugarcoated' with generous promises of aid and 'guarantees' of rapid welfare growth, simply because 'all democracies are prospering.' Many have fallen for this ploy, and we are witnessing the sad results of the Arab Spring," he added.

Responsibility for the crisis

In his opinion, the US embassy in the republic is responsible for the crisis unfolding in Sudan. "The US embassy in Khartoum and its 'backers' from other Western diplomatic missions are also directly responsible for what is happening," the interlocutor said.

He also noted that the Western diplomatic missions, blackmailing with sanctions and access to financial aid, forced the implementation of the framework agreement. "When 'the balloon went up', they were the first to flee the Sudanese capital, leaving Sudanese with American and British passports to the mercy of fate," the interlocutor of the agency said.

According to him, the UN special political mission in Sudan led by Volker Perthes has become "an obedient tool in the hands of American decision-makers," obstinately imposing a non-inclusive political process on Sudanese, whose aim is "to bring to power a government obedient to the West." "By pushing ahead, stirring up internal contradictions and creating the illusion of broad support for their 'projects,' the German and their Western partners actually led to the current escalation without caring about its consequences," the agency's interlocutor continued. - "Now they are trying to portray their concern and equidistance from both conflicting sides. Once again, as if nothing had happened, they offer their 'good services' to overcome the crisis, and again on their own terms. And they are diligently defending Volker Perthes."

The situation in Sudan has been exacerbated by disagreements between army commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who also leads the Sovereignty Council, and the head of the rapid support force, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. The main contradictions between the two structures relate to questions about the timing and methods of forming a unified Sudanese Armed Forces, as well as who should be the commander-in-chief of the army: a professional military, as advocated by al-Burhan, or an elected civilian president, as insisted on by Dagalo. On April 15, clashes broke out between the two entities near a military base in the city of Merowe, as well as in the capital Khartoum. According to the latest figures from Sudan's health ministry, more than 3,000 people have been killed and about 6,000 wounded since the fighting began.
