Russian Permanent Representative to Vienna: there are no reasons for pessimistic assessments of the future of Iran's nuclear deal

14 July 2021

Russia's Permanent Representative to Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov said on Wednesday to TASS that there are no grounds for pessimistic assessments of the current situation around the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear program and its future, but there should not be exaggerated expectations.

"There are no reasons to be pessimistic about the situation and to be pessimistic about the future. First of all, because all negotiators, including the Iranians, are sending signals that they are positive about the work already done and agree that it must continue. This does not mean that negotiations will be easy. However, there is definitely an intention to continue them," Ulyanov emphasized, speaking about the prospects for negotiations on the reinstatement of the nuclear deal with Iran.

On June 20, 2021, the negotiators on the reinstatement of the Iranian nuclear deal took a break to hold consultations in their capitals to prepare for the final round of talks. As the Russian ambassador noted, a deal to restore the nuclear deal is within reach. The start date for the seventh round of talks has not yet been set.

Face-to-face talks between Iran and the international "five" (Russia, Britain, Germany, China and France) have been taking place in Vienna since April with the goal of restoring the Iranian nuclear agreement to its original form: lifting US sanctions on Iran, fulfilling Iran's nuclear obligations, and returning the US to the deal. Representatives of the JCPOA states are also holding separate consultations with the US delegation without Iranian participation. All delegations were first expected to complete their work in late May and then in early June.
