Russian UN Ambassador Arrives in Lebanon with Security Council Delegation

04 December

Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya has arrived in Lebanon as part of a delegation of UN Security Council member states.

“On December 3, Permanent Representative Vasily Nebenzya arrived in Lebanon as part of a delegation from UN Security Council countries,” the press service of the Russian diplomatic mission announced on its Telegram channel. “The diplomats plan to meet with the leadership of the Lebanese Republic in Beirut and will also visit the area of responsibility of UNIFIL (the UN Interim Force in Lebanon), which plays a key role in maintaining stability north of the Blue Line,” the statement noted, referring to the UN-established demarcation line between Israel and Lebanon.

It was highlighted that the visit marks the first time in the history of the Security Council that its representatives will travel to Syria. “One of the main goals of the working trip is to reaffirm the Security Council members’ commitment to the stability of Lebanon and Syria, as well as to support the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and unity of these countries. Additionally, the mission will provide an opportunity to assess the security and political situation in both Arab republics,” the announcement added.

In late August, the UN Security Council extended UNIFIL’s mandate until December 31, 2026, and decided to begin an orderly and secure reduction and withdrawal of its personnel starting from that date, to be completed within one year.
