Russia's Overchuk to Attend East Asia Summit in Malaysia

27 October

A Russian delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk will participate in the 20th East Asia Summit (EAS) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The EAS serves as a key component of the ASEAN-centered security and cooperation architecture in the Asia-Pacific region. Russia maintains strategic partnership relations with ASEAN, and the summit is held annually alongside ASEAN meetings. The forum traditionally includes 18 participants: ASEAN members plus China, South Korea, Japan, Australia, India, and New Zealand, together with Russia and the United States. Timor-Leste officially joined ASEAN on October 26.

The agenda is expected to address US tariffs affecting regional countries, alongside discussions on enhancing ASEAN's cooperation with other Eurasian integration blocs such as the EAEU and CIS.

Beyond the summit, Overchuk's schedule includes bilateral meetings with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet.

“We maintain a substantial and substantive dialogue with Vietnam across all areas. Prime Minister Mishustin's visit to Vietnam this past January underscores our intensive engagement,” Overchuk noted ahead of the summit. “Regarding Cambodia, they also demonstrate strong interest in advancing cooperation with Russia, which we will discuss.”

Following the Kuala Lumpur summit, Overchuk's delegation will travel to South Korea for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.
