Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov held talks with Iran’s Ambassador to Moscow, Kazem Jalali, focusing on efforts to resolve the situation surrounding Iran’s nuclear program, according to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry.
“The discussion covered key international issues of mutual interest, including developments at the ongoing session of the IAEA Board of Governors, as well as broader international efforts to find a resolution on Iran’s nuclear program. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral coordination in line with decisions made by the leadership of Russia and Iran, and building on the results of the February 25 talks in Tehran between the two countries’ foreign ministers,” the statement said.
Iran has consistently maintained that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, but Western nations remain skeptical, suspecting potential military aims. As a result, Iran has faced repeated sanctions.
In 2015, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was agreed upon by the UN Security Council, Germany, and Iran, offering sanctions relief in exchange for limits on Tehran’s nuclear activities. However, in 2018, then-US President Donald Trump withdrew from the deal, effectively dismantling it.
Since then, multiple attempts to revive negotiations have ultimately failed — largely due to Washington’s stance. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has expressed willingness to resume talks if the US demonstrates genuine commitment. However, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has repeatedly warned that Tehran views past US actions as deceptive and untrustworthy.
