28 January 2021

Sadyr Zhaparov has officially assumed the post of the head of Kyrgyzstan, the RIA Novosti correspondent reports.

At the inauguration ceremony, he took the oath of office, promising to work for the benefit of the people, after which he kissed the flag of the country.

Nurzhan Shayldabekova, the head of the Central Election Commission, presented Japarov with state symbols - a badge and a presidential standard.

Early presidential elections in Kyrgyzstan were held on January 10. Turnout was low, with less than 40% of the total number of voters in attendance. Of these, 79.2% voted for Japarov. Adakhan Madumarov, the former speaker of the country, came in second place with 6.7% of the vote.

On the same day, a referendum was held to decide the form of government. Over 1.1 million citizens voted for a stronger presidency, 152,000 or slightly less than 11% voted for a parliamentary republic, and 62,000 (4.5%) opposed all forms of government.
