Saudi Foreign Ministry summons Denmark's Chargé d'affaires in response to Quran burning rallies

28 July 2023

Saudi Arabia's Foreign Ministry summoned Denmark's Chargé d'affaires to express a note of protest over the repeated Quran burning incidents in Copenhagen. It urged Danish authorities "to halt any actions that offend religious sentiments and violate international law."

The Quran burning actions took place in front of the Egyptian, Turkish and Iraqi embassies by representatives of the right-wing group "Danish Patriots." Similar actions were held on multiple occasions, drawing condemnation.

In response, Denmark's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the destruction of holy books and religious symbols is a shameful act and worthy of condemnation. The Danish government emphasized its commitment to the principles of freedom of religion, acknowledging that many of its subjects are Muslims. However, they also stressed "the importance of respecting freedom of expression and freedom of assembly."
