The Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) has condemned an attempt to destabilise Karakalpakstan, a republic within Uzbekistan, by organising mass disturbances and attempting to seize power structures. A statement to this effect was posted on the SCO RATS website on Monday.
"The SCO RATS Executive Committee condemns the anti-constitutional manifestations and attempts to destabilize the socio-political situation, advocating the preservation of stability, security and sustainable development in connection with the events of July 1 this year in Karakalpakstan, expresses support for the measures taken by the Government of Uzbekistan to ensure law and order, protect civil rights and freedoms, interethnic harmony and the peaceful coexistence of all peoples of multi-ethnic Uzbekistan," the statement reads.
