SCO Countries Call for Reform of the United Nations

01 September

Member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) have expressed the need to reform the United Nations to better reflect today’s realities.

“The SCO Council of Heads of States has adopted a statement on the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and the founding of the UN. The member states emphasize the necessity of adapting the UN to current political and economic circumstances through a well-considered reform aimed at ensuring the fair representation of developing countries within the UN’s governing bodies,” reads the Tianjin Declaration of the SCO.

The statement acknowledges that the creation of the UN as the foundation of the modern international system was among the most significant outcomes of World War II. “Over the past 80 years, the UN has established itself as a unique interstate organization that facilitates essential cooperation in maintaining peace and security, promoting steady socio-economic development, and advancing human rights,” the declaration says.

SCO countries stressed that lasting global peace is only achievable when all nations unconditionally adhere to international law and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

“We firmly support the establishment of a representative, democratic, fair, and multipolar world order grounded in universally recognized principles of international law, cultural and civilizational diversity, and mutually beneficial, equal cooperation among states—with the UN playing a central coordinating role,” the declaration concludes.
