Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has affirmed that Senegal will not act as a base for destabilizing Mali. Sonko made this statement during a working and friendly visit to Bamako on Monday, where he met with Mali’s interim President Assimi Goita and transitional Prime Minister Choguel Kokalla Maiga, as reported by ORTM TV.
During his visit, Sonko emphasized his commitment to Mali, stating, "When I come here, I am at home. I come to talk to my brothers. Even when we were in opposition, we were among the first to condemn, and we continue to strongly condemn, the embargo imposed on Mali by neighboring countries, including our own."
Sonko stressed that under his administration, such practices will not be tolerated. "No one will use Senegal to destabilize Mali or any other brotherly country or to impose sanctions against them," he asserted.
The West African Economic Community, of which Senegal is a member, had previously imposed sanctions on Mali following two military coups between 2020 and 2021.
