President Vladimir Putin has officially relieved Sergey Vershinin of his duties as Deputy Foreign Minister, appointing him as Russia’s new Ambassador to Turkey, the relevant decrees published on the official government portal for legal information state.
The first decree formally vacated Vershinin’s previous position at the Foreign Ministry, citing his move to a new role. A subsequent document finalized the diplomatic assignment, stating that Sergey Vasilyevich Vershinin is hereby appointed as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Turkey.
Born in 1954, Vershinin is a veteran of the Russian diplomatic service with a career spanning five decades. He graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) in 1976 and later completed his studies at the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry in 1991. His experience includes serving as Russia’s Ambassador to Algeria from 1999 to 2003 and acting as the Foreign Minister’s special representative for the Middle East peace process starting in 2011.
Vershinin assumed the role of Deputy Foreign Minister in 2018. He is fluent in Arabic, French, and English.
