Shahabuddin Chuppu elected new president of Bangladesh

13 February 2023

Former judge Mohammed Shahabuddin Chuppu of the ruling Awami League of Bangladesh party has been elected as the new president of Bangladesh. The UNB news agency reported this on Monday, citing the country's election commission.

Shahabuddin Chuppu was declared the country's next president after no other political party with representation in parliament offered a candidate to run.

The new head of state will take office on April 24, when incumbent President Abdul Hamid's term ends. The term of office of Hamid, who has led Bangladesh since 2013, cannot be extended because the constitution of that country does not allow for more than two terms in office.

The official announcement of Shahabuddin Chuppu's taking over as president of the republic will be published later on Monday.

The president in Bangladesh is elected by parliament for a term of five years with the possibility of re-election for one more term.
