Moscow is worried by the latest developments in Guinea-Bissau and proceeds from the principled rejection of any attempts at unconstitutional change of power. This was said in a statement of the Russian MFA released on Wednesday.
The Russian MFA pointed out that according to information coming in, there was an attempted coup d'etat in the republic on February 1.
"Moscow is concerned about the latest events in the friendly Republic of Guinea-Bissau. We are proceeding from our principled rejection of any attempts at an unconstitutional change of power," the ministry said.
"We urge all political forces of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau to refrain from actions that could provoke violence, and to work towards a peaceful resolution of differences. We trust that Bissau society will continue to advance along the path of stable and democratic development," the Russian MFA noted.
On Tuesday, armed men stormed the government house where an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers (government) was being chaired by the head of state. Arriving at the government house, a special unit of marines rescued the head of state and members of the government. Returning to his residence, the head of state made a speech to the people on Wednesday night. He said that those suspected of being involved in drug trafficking had tried to seize power in Guinea-Bissau.
