Sudan Aims for Strategic Partnership with Russia, Says Ambassador in Moscow

03 April

Sudan is looking to elevate its ties with Russia to the level of strategic partnership and seeks Russian assistance in the country’s reconstruction, Sudanese Ambassador to Russia Muhammad Sirraj stated in an interview with Izvestia.

"We eagerly anticipate expanding our bilateral relations to new horizons and reaching the stage of strategic partnership. Russia has proven itself to be a truly friendly nation in every sense. We count on meaningful and vital cooperation with Russia across all sectors, allowing it to play a clear and direct role in Sudan’s recovery," the ambassador emphasized.

Sirraj highlighted that since the outbreak of conflict, Moscow has taken a firm stance in support of Sudan’s government, backing its legitimate authorities on the international stage. He pointed out that Russia vetoed a British-led UN Security Council resolution that could have led to external interference in Sudan’s internal affairs.

"This was a defining example of Russia’s support for Sudan. We are grateful to Moscow for its consistent position, which prevented attempts to undermine our country’s sovereignty," Sirraj said.

Although the main military operation in Khartoum has concluded, he noted that ongoing military efforts are still necessary to eliminate terrorist forces, which have committed numerous atrocities against civilians, particularly in the Darfur region of western Sudan.
