20 April 2023

The events in Sudan are an internal affair of the country. The army of Sudan is able to normalize the situation. Sudanese Ambassador to Russia Mohammed Sirraj said this at a press conference on Thursday.

"What is happening in Sudan is an internal matter of the country, and the Sudanese army is capable in its tasks to bring the situation back to normal," the ambassador said when asked about the need for external political or military intervention in resolving the situation in the country.

"If events deteriorate [to the extent of] the need to evacuate foreigners from Sudan, <...> in accordance with its international obligations as well as under the Vienna Convention, the government of Sudan will provide maximum support to carry out any required evacuation, and this is certain," the diplomat said.

Contacts with Russia

"I want to confirm that Russia is a friendly country for us. We are in constant contact. It is necessary for Russia to know in detail what is happening in Sudan," Sirraj stressed.

"No, I have no such information," he said, when asked if the rebels have tried to contact the embassy in Moscow. - "There is no entity from Sudan that contacts the Sudanese embassy abroad except through the Sudanese foreign ministry. The foreign ministry is the only entity that contacts embassies."

"As for political asylum, have any of the leaders of the opposing sides asked for it? No, I have no information regarding such requests," the diplomat added.

As the ambassador noted, the Sudanese side has been in direct contact with the Russian MFA since the beginning of the aggravated situation in the republic. "Last Saturday [we] were in direct contact with the Russian foreign ministry. When these events emerged, I personally spoke by phone with Russian President's Special Representative for the Middle East and African countries, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mr. Mikhail Bogdanov and informed him about the nature of these events and how they were developing, and the next day I met with him at the foreign ministry building and discussed in detail what was happening in Sudan," Sirraj pointed out.

At the same time, the diplomat stressed that the Sudanese armed forces are doing everything to avoid civilian casualties. "I presented to him [Deputy Foreign Minister Bogdanov] the official vision of the Sudanese government regarding the developing events. I assured him that our army is working professionally to avoid many casualties, especially since the clashes are taking place in Khartoum, in the capital, and in other cities. So the Sudanese armed forces are trying to avoid infrastructural damage and avoid civilian casualties," the ambassador said.
