Sultan of Oman to visit Iran on May 28-29

24 May 2023

Sultan of Oman Haitham bin Tarik will visit Iran on May 28-29. This was reported by the Oman News Agency on Wednesday.

"The sultan of Oman will pay a two-day official visit to Iran on Sunday, May 28, at the invitation of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi," the agency cited excerpts from a statement by the Sultan's office.

The sultan's visit, the document noted, comes "as part of ongoing consultations and coordination between the two leaders to discuss various developments in regional and international arenas." At the meeting, Raisi and Al Said will also discuss bilateral cooperation in all fields, the office said.

On May 21, the sultan of Oman visited Cairo. During the visit, the two countries agreed to abolish taxation and cooperate in the financial sphere.

On May 18, Al Araby Al Jadeed  informed, citing Egyptian diplomatic source, that the Sultanate of Oman has taken the initiative to develop relations between Iran and Egypt.

Ties between Cairo and Tehran were severed in 1980 after the Islamic Revolution, when Egypt gave asylum to the deposed Shah of Iran Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. In addition, the bilateral relations were affected by the Arab republic's signing of a peace agreement with Israel. The countries did not normalize relations until 2010, but they have never been officially restored.
