Syria supports Russia and its special military operation. Foreign Minister of the Arab republic Faisal Mekdad said this on Monday, speaking at the general political debate of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly.

"We believe that Russia has the right to defend itself in the face of aggressive Western policies," he stressed. - "We also express our confidence that the Russian army is not only defending its national territory, but also defending the rights of other peoples to justice and to freedom."

"Syria believes that Russia is fighting for the aspirations of all humanity, which rejects unipolar hegemony, and we also call for a new multipolar world order," the foreign minister said.

In his view, the war in Syria, which has been going on since 2011, "was part of the West's attempts to maintain its control over the world by using terrorist gangs." "The example of Syria also makes it clear that US and European Union sanctions are instruments of collective punishment for peoples who defend their national sovereignty," Mekdad said.
