Syria to Cooperate with Western Coalition Against Islamic State

11 November

Syria has reached an agreement to cooperate with the US-led international coalition in combating the terrorist organization Islamic State (ISIS, banned in Russia), according to Hamza Mustafa, Information Minister of the Arab Republic's interim government.

“Syria has signed a declaration of political cooperation with the international coalition against ISIS, confirming its role as a partner in combating terrorism and maintaining regional stability,” he wrote on X. Mustafa emphasized that “the agreement is political in nature and currently contains no military component.” The international coalition against ISIS was formed at US initiative in 2014.

The minister also noted that the first-ever visit of a Syrian president to Washington “marks the beginning of a new chapter in Syrian-American relations and Syria's full return to the international arena.”

Earlier, US President Donald Trump held talks at the White House with Syria's interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa. According to the Syrian leader's office, the sides discussed strengthening bilateral relations, along with regional and international issues of mutual interest. Following the Trump-al-Sharaa meeting, the US Treasury Department announced that Washington has suspended anti-Syrian sanctions under the so-called Caesar Act, while maintaining the ban on the republic's transactions with Russia and Iran.
