Syrian Army Assumes Control of Al-Tanf Military Base

12 February

The Syrian army has established full control over the Al-Tanf military base, formerly held by the US-led Western coalition, the Ministry of Defense within the Syrian Arab Republic’s transitional government stated.

"Based on coordination between the Syrian and American sides, units of the Syrian Arab Army have assumed control of the Al-Tanf base, securing both the facility and its surrounding perimeter," the ministry stated. Furthermore, defense officials announced that government forces have begun "deploying along the Syrian-Iraqi-Jordanian border within the Al-Tanf desert region."

The Al-Tanf base is located at the borders of Syria, Iraq, and Jordan. It was originally established by the US-led coalition in 2014 as a primary hub for operations against the Islamic State (banned in Russia), allowing the coalition to monitor the strategic Damascus-Baghdad highway.
