The security forces of Syria's transitional government have pledged to track down and confront supporters of former President Bashar al-Assad who refuse to lay down their arms. This was announced by the interim Minister of Internal Affairs, Mohammed Abdel Rahman.
“What happened on the coast (in Tartus) strengthens our determination to eradicate the remnants of Assad's regime,” Abdel Rahman told Al Hadath. “Our forces will pursue those who resist disarmament across the entirety of Syrian territory,” he emphasized.
Escalating Tensions in Tartus
On Thursday night, the minister reported an ambush targeting law enforcement officers of the transitional government near Tartus, resulting in 14 fatalities and 10 injuries among security personnel. This followed an earlier operation in Tartus to apprehend a high-ranking officer from Assad's former security forces, during which nine transitional government fighters were killed.
Protests erupted in several coastal cities, including Tartus, Latakia, Jableh, and Homs, led by members of the Alawite community, a religious minority in Syria. Demonstrators clashed with police, leading to attacks on law enforcement personnel. In response, authorities imposed a curfew in the coastal regions and deployed reinforcements, accusing Assad loyalists of inciting unrest.
