The security forces formed by the radical movement Taliban (banned in the Russian Federation) that seized power in Afghanistan, have eliminated a cell of the terrorist group Islamic State (banned in the Russian Federation), Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said on Twitter on Wednesday.
He said the operation, which took place Wednesday night in Kabul's 12th district, "killed three important members of the IS." The Taliban also seized weapons, hand grenades, explosives and bomb-making materials from the militants. Taliban fighters and civilians were not harmed during the operation.
According to Afghan authorities, the terrorists "were using the hideout to carry out attacks in Kabul." They also intended to "target holy sites and civilians during the holy month of Ramadan."
In recent months, several provinces in Afghanistan, including the capital region, have seen a series of bombings, armed attacks and shootings that have targeted both Taliban supporters and civilians. The Islamic State in Khorasan, an offshoot of IS, has claimed responsibility for many of these incidents.
