Celebrations dedicated to the Day of Cosmonautics were held on Monday in Tashkent at the monument to Yuri Gagarin, who 60 years ago made the first space flight in human history. The event was opened by Russian Ambassador to Uzbekistan Oleg Malginov.

"On April 12, exactly 60 years ago, our legendary compatriot Yuri Gagarin paved the way to the stars. The hero, who united all the multinational people of a vast country that just recently lived through a terrible and devastating World War II, was known by old and young, scientist and peasant, doctor and steelworker, in his honor were named children, streets, parks and cities, including in Uzbekistan," said the head of Russian diplomatic mission.

He said that the exploration of space is one of the areas of cooperation between Russia and Uzbekistan. Quite recently, according to him, the text of an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation between Russia and Uzbekistan in the exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes has been approved, which can be signed during the upcoming visit of the President of Uzbekistan to Moscow.

According to the diplomat, work continues on a project to build a joint radio astronomical observatory Sufa in the Jizzakh region of Uzbekistan. It is expected to be equipped with the world's largest radio telescope.

The ceremony, attended by Uzbek officials, was followed by an impromptu concert at the monument to Yuri Gagarin, during which the participants performed well-known songs dedicated to the first manned flight into space.
