Tatarstan intends to prepare offer for Aurus cars purchase for Turkmenistan

19 January 2023

The ministry of industry of Tatarstan plans to prepare a proposal for the purchase of Aurus automobiles for Turkmenistan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry of Tatarstan Oleg Korobchenko told reporters on Thursday on the sidelines of the Russian-Turkmen business forum.

"This morning, when we were driving here to the forum, a large Mercedes motorcade outrun us. I was driving and thinking why do they drive Mercedes? Although Aurus is of much higher quality, fully import-substituted, it is made in Russia, a country friendly to Turkmenistan. <...> On my arrival I will talk to the leadership of Aurus. We need to meet with the leadership of Turkmenistan and make them an offer they cannot refuse: these will be our Aurus cars both armored and regular sedan class", he told TASS.

Korobchenko noted that Tatarstan has recently started making a new Aurus car model - Komendant. "Literally on February 28, there will be a presentation of this jeep in Tatarstan. It will be held in Tatarstan at the collegium of the ministry of industry of Tatarstan," he added.

Aurus cars is a line of representative vehicles, which has been created since 2013 by order of the Minpromtorg of the Russian Federation. The project involves the development of a line of cars both to replace the fleet of official vehicles of government officials, and for commercial sales. Since May 2021 the cars have been produced in series at the Aurus plant in Elabuga (Tatarstan). At present, the Aurus Senat sedan and Komendant SUV are produced.

The Russian-Turkmen business forum is held in Ashgabat on January 19-20. The sides will discuss cooperation in industrial cooperation, construction, IT, digitalization, transport and logistics, education and other areas. Deputy Chairman of Turkmenistan Cabinet of Ministers Rashid Meredov and Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin will open the plenary session of the forum on January 19. Bilateral meetings between representatives of public and private entities of Turkmenistan and Russia are also planned on the margins of the forum.
