Iran has not yet issued a response to US President Donald Trump’s letter, as officials are still working on its content, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said during a press conference with his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan.
“We have not responded to the US president’s letter yet. The response is being prepared and will be provided at the appropriate time,” Araghchi stated, according to Iran’s state news agency SNN.
Earlier in March, Trump announced that he had sent a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, expressing his preference for negotiating a deal on Iran’s nuclear program rather than escalating tensions. The US president later emphasized that Washington was considering two possible approaches—military action or diplomacy—but made it clear he favored negotiations.
On March 19, Axios reported, citing sources, that Trump’s letter to Khamenei set a two-month deadline for reaching a new nuclear agreement. Back in February, Trump had also stated that he was open to striking a deal with Iran instead of pursuing military confrontation. He stressed his desire for a “verified” nuclear agreement that would allow Iran to develop peacefully and prosper, urging immediate engagement.
At the time, Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told Iran’s IRNA news agency that Moscow was ready to assist Tehran in addressing issues related to its nuclear program.
