Tehran says Russia and Iran should take advantage of sanctions regime

07 December 2022

Russia and Iran should use the opportunities offered by the sanctions regime of the Western countries, Chairman of the Iranian Majlis (parliament) Commission on National Security and Foreign Policy Vahid Jalalzadeh said on Wednesday.

"In my opinion, both Russia and Iran should use the opportunities that sanctions [of Western countries] give us to strengthen their own society and ignore the anger of the Americans at all, and continue to follow their own path," he told Russia-24.

Speaking about the prospects for economic cooperation between the countries, Jalalzadeh noted that Iran can pass on to Russia the experience it has gained during its time under sanctions. "Given the significant progress we have made in the Islamic republic in all spheres, we can provide for many of Russia's economic needs," he stressed.

Jalalzadeh also pointed to increased trade between Russia and Iran, which reached a record $4 billion in 2022.

The new world order will be established after the resolution of the conflict in Ukraine, Jalalzadeh said. According to him, Iran seeks to understand its place in the new world order, as well as what position the allies of the Islamic republic will hold in it.

Jalalzadeh also expressed confidence that the United States will be isolated in the new system of international relations. "I foresee three important developments. First of all, we are talking about the isolation of the United States, the multipolarity of the world and the creation of a front of resistance to Western liberal democracy," the deputy stressed.

"Countries are now moving toward regional alliances and coalitions. Iran and Russia have been working on the idea of what I call a front of resistance to the United States and Western countries for several years," he added.
