The DNR announced Syria's preliminary consent to participate in an international tribunal

07 July 2022

Syria has given preliminary consent to participate in an international tribunal for war criminals in the Donetsk People's Republic. The Lugansk People's Republic will also take part, DNR Foreign Minister Natalia Nikonorova told TASS.

"There is already a certain understanding of which countries could participate in the tribunal in one capacity or another. First of all, it is our fraternal Lugansk People's Republic. In addition, representatives of the relevant bodies of the Russian Federation are already conducting investigative actions on the territory of the republics. During our visit to Syria we offered President Bashar al-Assad to consider the possibility of participation of the Syrian Arab Republic in the international tribunal and received preliminary consent," the source said.

The foreign minister of the DNR specified that one of the important tasks of the ministry is the preparation of the charter of the international tribunal. "It is on the basis of this charter that all procedural actions will take place, including the condemnation of the perpetrators. Here I note that this tribunal is planned to be established on the basis of an international treaty," the minister added.

The DNR authorities expect to hold several intermediate tribunals against members of Ukrainian armed groups involved in the commission of war crimes by the end of the summer. One of the first will be the Mariupol tribunal, where crimes committed in Volnovakha will also be considered. It is expected that members of nationalist battalions, in particular Azov and Aidar, as well as members of the Ukrainian armed forces will be brought before the tribunal.
