The Statement of Group of strategic vision “Russia – Islamic World” at the Second Meeting

31 August 2006

The Statement of Group of strategic vision “Russia – Islamic World” at the Second Meeting of Group of strategic vision “Russia - Islamic world” that took place in Kazan, on August 29-31 2006.

We, the representatives of Russia and a number of member countries of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, have met in Kazan (Republic of Tatarstan) for the second meeting of Group of strategic vision “Russia – Islamic World”. We declare the following.

Israel’s recent war in Lebanon, which has nothing to do with the anti-terrorist operation, vividly demonstrated the danger of full-scale war in the Middle East and splitting the world along civilizational lines. The further development of events in such a scenario, if not taken active steps by the international community, may become irreversible and create a real threat to the future of mankind. In this connection the activities of international organizations, primarily the United Nations, the Organization of the Islamic Conference and the Arab League acquire special importance. We believe that international organizations should realign its work so as to become more effective in addressing the pressing global problems.

We believe that these organizations can and should not only be responsible for the basic principles of peace and security based on respect for international law and legitimacy, but must also play an effective and objective role in the fight against xenophobia and extremism in the international arena.

Today’s problems are largely born out of misunderstanding, ignorance and unresolved international disputes on the basis of the relevant resolutions.

The international community cannot allow our land to be divided by the Iron Curtain again. People have to remember that, taking into account the global nature of today’s threats, we can only confront them together.

The future of the planet will largely depend on the results of our joint actions.
