Tokayev Dismisses Heads of Foreign Intelligence and Anti-Terror Services

16 September

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has removed the heads of the Foreign Intelligence Service and the Anti-Terrorism Service from their positions, according to a statement from the presidential press office.

“Ruslan Seisembayev has been relieved of his duties as Deputy Chairman of the National Security Committee of Kazakhstan and Head of the Anti-Terrorism Service. Askar Amerkhanov has been dismissed from his position as Deputy Chairman of the National Security Committee and Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service,” the statement confirmed. The reasons for these dismissals were not disclosed.

Both officials, Amerkhanov and Seisembayev, had held their respective roles since April 2023.

This move follows a Security Council meeting at the end of August, chaired by Tokayev, which focused on addressing extremism and terrorism in response to the evolving international landscape. During the meeting, Tokayev instructed security forces to intensify efforts to safeguard the country’s citizens.
