Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev emphasized the importance of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) as a mechanism for fostering integration among member states in the Eurasian region, ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Astana.
“Astana and Moscow have been working productively within the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union, which has become a significant tool for integration across Eurasia and gained international recognition,” Tokayev wrote in an article titled “Kazakhstan and Russia: New Horizons of Strategic Partnership,” published in Izvestia to coincide with Putin's visit.
Tokayev also highlighted that 2024 marks the 10th anniversary of the treaty establishing the EAEU. He noted that Kazakhstan and Russia, as initiators and founding members of the union, have consistently sought to enhance mutual cooperation to boost competitiveness on a global scale. According to Tokayev, the EAEU has proven its effectiveness as a critical platform for aligning economic policies among member states and advancing mutual trade.
On May 29, 2014, in Astana, President Putin participated in the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council meeting, where he, alongside Presidents of Kazakhstan and Belarus Nursultan Nazarbayev and Alexander Lukashenko, signed the treaty creating the Eurasian Economic Union.
During his visit to Kazakhstan from November 27-28, Putin is scheduled to hold discussions on bilateral cooperation, deliver a joint video address with Tokayev at the plenary session of the Kazakhstan-Russia Interregional Cooperation Forum in Ufa, and attend the Collective Security Treaty Organization summit.
