Tokayev: upcoming elections in Kazakhstan should be held honestly, openly and fairly

16 November 2022

The election campaign for the upcoming November 20 special election of the president of Kazakhstan should be held honestly, openly and fairly. This was stated by the acting head of state Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev at the meeting with the public in Almaty on Wednesday.

"In just a few days, the presidential election will take place. Their outcome will determine how Kazakhstan will develop in the next seven years. The voting process and the entire election campaign must take place honestly, openly and fairly. Strict adherence to these principles will guarantee further strengthening of citizens' trust in the state," he said.

Tokayev explained that in his understanding, the president is a hired manager, contracted by the people for a certain period. "Whoever holds the highest public office in the country as a result of the free expression of the will of the citizens, actually signs a contract sealed by the votes of millions of fellow compatriots. Therefore, the position of the president is not so much a privilege as an enormous responsibility. Everyone who has held and will hold this post will be responsible to the three most demanding judges - the people, history and their own conscience," said the head of state.

He also said that the republic's authorities will consistently strengthen the role of NGOs, develop competitive media, and strengthen public oversight. "This way the ideology of solidarity and mutual responsibility for the present and future of our homeland will take root in the country," Tokayev concluded.

The republic's central election commission registered six candidates for the upcoming elections. These include current head of state Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev from the People's Coalition, economist Meiram Kazhiken from Amanat, Zhiguli Dayrabayev from the Auyl People's Patriotic Democratic Party, Karakat Abden from the National Alliance of Professional Social Workers, Saltanat Tursynbekova from the republican public association  Qazaq analary – dasturge zhol (Kazakh mothers are a path to traditions), as well as Nurlan Auesbayev, chairperson of the Astana city branch of the Nationwide Social Democratic Party.
