Libya's Government of National Unity (GNU) Foreign Minister Najla Mangoush said she discussed with her Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov the resumption of work on bilateral security and economic agreements.

"During today's meeting, we also discussed the need to revive work on agreements between our two countries concerning the economic, security and other areas," Mangoush said on Thursday at a press conference following the talks.

The minister noted that Libya appreciates Russia's contribution to the ceasefire and efforts to resolve the situation in the republic during the Berlin conferences.

"We also appreciate Russia's readiness to provide all possible assistance with regard to the timetable for the withdrawal of foreign armed formations from Libyan territory," she summarized.

Tripoli expects that Moscow will only strengthen its already significant role in ensuring security in Libya and will also assist in the withdrawal of foreign mercenaries from the country, Mangoush said.

"Russia already has a noticeable, significant and effective role in ensuring security on Libyan territory, but we still expect that this role will be even more weighty and tangible. This includes Russia's consistent efforts to facilitate the withdrawal of all foreign fighters, mercenaries from Libyan territory, as well as the creation of unified Libyan power structures, the creation of full-fledged Libyan statehood, the implementation of other economic projects that will ultimately also contribute to the reconstruction of the country," Mangoush noted.

According to Mangoush, Russia has "solid weight in the international arena," and Libya hopes that Moscow "can use its considerable influence" to resolve the issue in a positive way. "We expect that, including under the wise leadership of the Russian Foreign Minister [Sergey Lavrov], such a course will be continued and activated," the Libyan foreign minister said. She also expressed hope for Russian support for Tripoli's recent initiative to hold consultations on stabilization in Libya.
