Trump Announces Progress on Nuclear Deal with Iran

26 May

The United States has held positive talks with Iran and made progress on Tehran's nuclear program, President Donald Trump said on Sunday before departing New Jersey for Washington. His remarks to reporters were broadcast by American news networks.

“It’s very important that yesterday and today we had very good talks with Iran. Let’s see what happens, but I think we could have some good news on the Iran front. Speaking specifically about the nuclear program, we had very, very good talks with Iran. And I don’t know if I’ll be telling you anything good or bad over the next two days, but I have a feeling I might be telling you something good. We’ve had some real progress—serious progress,” the US leader said.

When asked whether another round of US–Iran talks would happen soon, Trump responded, "Very soon. I can’t say what will happen tomorrow. But I can say that the talks with Iran are going very well. I’d really like to see [a nuclear deal] happen."

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated on Sunday that Iran and the US have yet to agree on the date and location for the next round of negotiations. The two delegations last met on May 23 in Rome for the fifth round of discussions. Oman’s foreign minister, acting as a mediator, said there had been "some, though not final, progress." According to Araghchi, both sides are preparing for a new round of talks and hope to achieve positive results within one or two additional meetings.

The ongoing negotiation process, which began on April 12, previously faced a deadlock over uranium enrichment. The US has been demanding that Iran completely halt enrichment at its nuclear facilities, while Tehran insists its nuclear program is strictly peaceful. Following the US withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018, Iran stopped complying with the 2015 agreement’s limits and ramped up enrichment to 60%. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran’s current enrichment levels are close to weapons-grade.
