US President Donald Trump has stated that he has engaged in communication with Iranian leadership over the past few days and intends to maintain these contacts. His goal is to persuade Tehran to abandon its nuclear weapons development and to stop the use of disproportionate force against protesters.
"I have had and I am planning on it [to continue them]," the American leader told reporters when asked whether contact with leadership in Tehran had occurred recently and whether he intended to pursue further diplomatic efforts. "I told them two things. Number one, no nuclear [weapons]. And number two, stop killing protesters," Trump remarked, referring to the content of his communications with Iranian authorities. "They are killing them by the thousands," the head of the US administration claimed, referencing the demonstrators within the Islamic Republic.
"We have a lot of very big, very powerful ships sailing to Iran right now, and it would be great if we didn't have to use them," the American leader added.
