Turkish Foreign Minister: Hamas' Ideology Will Exist Until a Palestinian State Is Established

27 February

The ideology behind the Hamas movement will continue to exist until an independent Palestinian state is created. This view was expressed by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in an interview with Qatar’s Al Jazeera television channel, published on Wednesday, in response to a question about Hamas' future role in governing the Gaza Strip.

“Hamas is an idea that emerged in response to the Israeli occupation. Hamas could disappear today, but the resistance will continue in other forms as long as the occupation remains,” Fidan said. According to him, focusing on Hamas’ role is a distraction from the real issue, which is “the occupation of Palestinian land.”

In Fidan’s view, over time, another movement could emerge — one even more capable of resisting and waging war — and history would repeat itself.

On February 15, citing a source, the Egyptian television channel Al-Qahira Al-Ikhbariya reported that Hamas had informed mediators it intends to uphold the ceasefire agreement with Israel and does not plan to participate in governing Gaza in the future. According to the source, Egypt has been holding intensive consultations on creating a temporary committee that would be responsible for providing aid to Gaza residents and overseeing the enclave’s reconstruction.

For the past year, Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas have been holding negotiations — with Egypt acting as a mediator — on post-war governance in Gaza. The latest round took place in Cairo in November 2024. As a result, the parties agreed to create a so-called Public Support Committee, which would assume authority in Gaza until the formation of a unified Palestinian national unity government.

According to Egyptian sources, this temporary body was established by a decree from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and consists of independent representatives, all of whom are Gaza natives unaffiliated with any political party.
