Turkish Foreign Minister to Attend BRICS Ministerial Meeting in Russia

04 June

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is set to take part in the upcoming BRICS foreign ministers' gathering, scheduled to convene in Nizhny Novgorod on June 10-11. The announcement was made during his official visit to China, as reported by the Anadolu Agency.

"Turkey, being a member of the Customs Union with the European Union, is continuously exploring new avenues for collaboration across various platforms, including BRICS. We are looking forward to attending the BRICS meeting, which is slated to take place in Russia next week," the minister stated.

Previously, Pavel Knyazev, Ambassador-at-Large at the Russian Foreign Ministry and Russia's representative to BRICS, had mentioned that approximately 20–25 countries, including the top-tier members of the association, are expected to join the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting (FMM).

It is noteworthy that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had participated in the BRICS summit back in 2018. At that time, Russian President Vladimir Putin hinted at the possibility of Ankara becoming a member of BRICS by 2022. However, Turkey has yet to make any formal moves in this regard.
