Around 400 people have died and more than 190 have been injured in Pakistan over the past 10 days due to heavy rains and flooding, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported.
“According to authorities, in the past 10 days, torrential rains and sudden flooding in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir have claimed 400 lives and left over 190 injured. More than 20,000 people remain without shelter,” OCHA stated.
Flood victims urgently need medical services, clean water, hygiene supplies, and materials to rebuild their homes. UN Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher has allocated $600,000 for relief efforts.
This year’s monsoon season has brought widespread damage to Pakistan due to persistent downpours and floods, OCHA noted. Authorities report that since June, 798 people have died and more than 1,000 have been injured.
Pakistan’s monsoon season usually runs from June through September, bringing needed rains for agriculture but also causing frequent flooding and other natural disasters.
