UN Expands Humanitarian Response in Gaza

23 January

The United Nations is ramping up its humanitarian efforts to stabilize life in the Gaza Strip, according to Al Jazeera, citing Jonathan Whittall, head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Gaza.

"Supplies have already begun arriving, and we are scaling up humanitarian responses on the ground," Whittall stated. "Lives are at risk, and we cannot afford any delays," he emphasized.

The recent ceasefire agreement in Gaza, which came into effect late last week, includes provisions for aid deliveries, medical evacuations, the return of displaced people, and the repair of critical infrastructure. UN agencies have intensified food distribution, started providing new tents and winter clothing, begun hospital restorations, repaired water pipelines, cleared roads, and removed debris, according to Whittall.

As reported by Al Jazeera, 900 and 808 aid trucks arrived in Gaza on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, alleviating the severe shortages of food and essential supplies caused by months of Israeli blockades on the Palestinian enclave.
