UN High Commissioner Calls for Lifting Sanctions on Syria

15 January

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, currently visiting Damascus, has announced his intention to call for the lifting of sanctions imposed on Syria.

“I will strongly advocate for the removal of sanctions against Syria so the country can address the challenges of reconstruction,” Türk stated during a press conference, as quoted by Al Jazeera. His remarks came following a meeting with Ahmed al-Sharaa, the leader of Syria's new administration.

The High Commissioner emphasized the presence of “human rights and transitional justice challenges” in Syria, highlighting the need for comprehensive support to help the Syrian people rebuild their nation.

Türk also expressed hope that “all Syrians will live in prosperity without any form of discrimination.”
