UN Secretary-General to meet with Special Envoys for Afghanistan in Doha

19 April 2023

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres will hold a meeting with special envoys for Afghanistan from different countries on May 1 in Doha, according to former US Special Envoy to Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad.

"On May 1, UN Secretary-General Guterres will meet with special envoys on Afghanistan from around the world," Khalilzad wrote on Twitter. He also call to develop a roadmap with representatives of the interim government of Afghanistan formed by the Taliban (banned in the Russian Federation).

In the spring of 2021, the radical Taliban launched a massive operation to take control of Afghanistan after the US announced its decision to withdraw its military forces from there. On August 15, the Taliban entered Kabul without a fight and on September 7 announced the composition of their provisional government, whose legitimacy has not yet been recognized by any country.

Despite the measures taken by the Taliban, the economic situation in Afghanistan remains extremely difficult. According to the UN, more than 28 million Afghans are in need of assistance.

Khalilzad has served in the National security council, the State Department and the Pentagon, as US ambassador to Kabul and Baghdad, as permanent representative to the United Nations and as a special envoy to Afghanistan. Khalilzad, who left government service, is now an advisor to the White House.
