The United Nations Security Council has called for the implementation of an inclusive political process in Syria, in alignment with the key principles of Resolution 2254. This was outlined in a statement released by the Council.
Council members reaffirmed their support for the efforts of UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen in facilitating this process. They emphasized the need for a framework that meets the legitimate aspirations of all Syrians, ensures their protection, and enables them to peacefully and democratically determine their future. The statement also reiterated the Council's commitment to the principles of Syria's sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity, urging all nations to respect these tenets.
The Security Council stressed the importance of combating terrorism in Syria and preventing the resurgence of the banned extremist group ISIS, along with other terrorist organizations. It also called on Syria to adhere to resolutions related to unconventional weapons.
The Council urged compliance with international humanitarian law, including ensuring humanitarian access, and expressed solidarity with victims, their families, and the Syrian people. Additionally, it highlighted the importance of supporting the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and ensuring the implementation of its mandate under the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.
Finally, the Security Council reminded all parties of the need to respect the inviolability of diplomatic and consular premises and personnel, as stipulated under international law.
