The United States must cease attempts to push Middle Eastern countries to abandon their traditions and to impose reforms upon them. This is stated in the updated US National Security Strategy released by the White House.
"Our Middle Eastern partners are demonstrating their commitment to combating radicalism. US policy should continue to support this trend. However, to do so, the United States will need to abandon the mistaken experiment of compelling [Middle Eastern] countries, especially the Gulf monarchies, to retreat from their traditions and historical forms of governance," the document notes. It also emphasizes that Washington should "encourage and welcome reforms" carried out in the region's countries "organically," "without attempting to impose them from the outside."
