President Donald Trump has signed an executive order initiating the process to designate Yemen's Houthi movement, Ansar Allah, as a foreign terrorist organization. The White House press office announced the decision on Wednesday.
"This order starts the process by which Ansar Allah, also known as the Houthi movement, will be considered for inclusion in the list of foreign terrorist organizations," the statement reads.
According to the document, the actions of the Houthis pose a threat to the safety of US citizens in the Middle East, the security of regional partners, and the stability of global maritime trade.
Amid the intensified conflict in Gaza, Ansar Allah warned it would target Israel and prevent ships connected to the country from passing through the Red Sea and Bab-el-Mandeb Strait until operations in Gaza cease. Since November 2023, the Houthis have attacked dozens of civilian vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
In response to these threats, the US announced the formation of an international coalition to ensure freedom of navigation and protect shipping in the Red Sea. Subsequently, British and American forces have conducted regular strikes on Houthi military targets across various Yemeni provinces.
