The US handed over military equipment to Tajikistan's State National Security Committee to strengthen the country's law enforcement infrastructure on the border with Afghanistan, the press service of Tajikistan's Chemical, Biological, Radiation and Nuclear Security Agency said Thursday.
"The technical assistance was provided as part of the green border security project, which aims to strengthen the infrastructure of law enforcement agencies of the Republic of Tajikistan along the border with Afghanistan," the statement said.
The agency noted that on behalf of the US Department of Energy, special clothing, body armor, equipment for conducting operations in mountainous terrain, special protective mine clearance uniforms, night vision equipment, binoculars, monoculars, radio sets, military vehicles, and special vehicles with equipment to detect illegal trafficking of nuclear and radioactive materials are being transferred.
The equipment is needed to implement Tajikistan's national action plan under UN Security Council Resolution 1540 on nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction, the agency said.
